Biological aspects and life table of the red spider mite, Tetranychus desertorum Banks, 1900, were studied on leaf discs of kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris Linnaeus) cultivar "Tacarigua" under laboratory conditions (28 ± 2ºC, 70 ± 10% R.H. and 12:12h). Our results showed that total developmental time was 6.8 days for females, with partial duration of immature stages corresponding to 3.8, 1.4, 1.0 and 0.7 for egg, larva, protonymph and deutonymph, respectively. Preoviposition, oviposition and postoviposition periods were 1.1, 8.4 and 1.3 days, respectively; and the higher mean fecundity (6.93 eggs/female/day) was observed on day 4. Female mean longevity was 10 days. The life table parameters recorded were: net reproduction rate (Ro) = 41.10 individuals;... |

ABSTRACT Existing knowledge of the breeding success and life history characteristics of most Neotropical bird species is scarce. Here, we help fill this gap by analyzing aspects of the breeding biology of the Tropical Kingbird Tyrannus melancholicus (Vieillot, 1819), which is a good model for this kind of study as it is a common species occurring in various environments, including urban areas, but little is known about its life history. We provide results concerning the breeding period, clutch size, incubation and nestling periods, description of nests, eggs and nestlings, and the plants used for nest sites by this species. Fifty-four nests were monitored over two seasons (2012-2014) in a protected area in southeastern Brazil. Nesting began at the end of... |

The main life history traits of the large Amazonian migratory catfish Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii were determined in the Caqueta River, Colombia. The breeding season occurred during the rising and falling water periods. The size at first sexual maturity was significantly larger for females (88.5 cm Ls) than males (81.7 cm). Both males and females reproduce for the first time between their third and fourth year. The growth characteristics were estimated using length frequency analyses. Females grew systematically larger than males, the difference being about 9% after the first year and increasing to 12% for ten years old individuals. Mortality estimates, calculated from different models, some taking into account the effect of body size, ranged from 0.32 to... |

We studied life history traits of females of the lizard Eurolophosaurus nanuzae (Rodrigues, 1981), an endemic species of rock outcrop habitats in southeastern Brazil. During October 2002 and 2003 we sampled three populations in sites that encompass the meridional portion of the geographic range of the species. Clutch size varied from one to three eggs, with most females carrying two eggs. Clutch size did not vary among populations, but was correlated to female body size. Only larger females produced clutches of three eggs. Females of the small-sized E. nanuzae produce eggs as large as those of medium-sized tropidurids, thus investing a considerable amount of energy to produce clutches resulting in high values of relative clutch mass. |

Kinetic parameters (uptake from solution and elimination rate constants) of Cu, Ni and Pb bioaccumulation were determined from two Gammarus pulex and three Gammarus fossrum wild populations collected from reference sites throughout France in order to assess the inter-species and the natural inter-population variability of metal bioaccumulation kinetics in that sentinel organism. For that, each population was independently exposed for seven days to either 2.5 mu g L-1 Cu (39.3 nM), 40 mu g L-1 Ni (681 nM) or 10 mu g L-1 Pb (48.3 nM) in laboratory controlled conditions, and then placed in unexposed microcosms for a 7-day depuration period. In the same way, the possible influence of metal exposure history on subsequent metal bioaccumulation kinetics was... |

Published studies on the demography and reproductive strategies of harpacticoid copepods are examined critically. At the technical level, the popular approximation <i>r</i> = ln R0/Tc is shown to be inappropriate as an estimate of the intrinsic rate of increase of harpacticoids. It leads to a systematic underestimation, by 8-29%, for life histories typical of fast-breeding species. Various <i>ad hoc</i> variants of <i>r</i> and <i>R0</i> calculations occurring in the literature are also criticized. At the conceptual level, a more discriminating approach to life-history characteristics is necessary; this applies both to the assessment of... |

Antlions larvae are sit-and-wait predators that capture arthropod prey in conical sand pits. The aim of this paper were to determine the effect of different natural diets [leaf-cutting ants (Atta spp.), fruit fly larvae (Anastrepha spp. and Ceratitis capitata) and mixed diet (Atta spp. plus fruit fly larvae)] on the development of larvae and pupae of M. brasiliensis (Navás, 1914) and to estimate the number and size of prey caught in each instar and on each kind of diet. The average duration (days) of the second and third instars of M. brasiliensis was longer when larvae of antlion were fed with leaf-cutting ants. The diets did not affect the duration of the pupal stage nor the pupae size. The different diets did not affect the mean width of head capsule... |

The most frequent endoparasite of the Maned wolf - Chrysocyon brachyurus (Illiger, 1815) is the giant kidney-worm. Dioctophyma renale (Goeze, 1782). It has heen responsible for the majority of deaths of captive animals. Twenty-six marked wolves have been followed in the field with ear-tags and radio-collar tagged (Tab. II) to investigate their interactions with the environment, their diurnal shelters, movements and habits, and their delivery sites. Ten years of life history data have heen gathered. They are territorial and monogamous, and give birth to two or three young once a year, after a 63 days gestation, on average. Maned wolves inhabit the open areas and have omnivorous feeding habits. |

In zones of high productivity and/or in shallow waters (frontal or upwellings areas, bays and estuaries) the hydromedusae can reach exceptional abundances, denominated 'blooms'. Occasionally, these exceptional abundances are originated from some few individuals that constitute a 'seed population', which is retained in particular places while the environmental conditions are adverse. Liriope tetraphylla is a holoplanktonic and oceanic hydromedusae that often is found forming dense aggregations, which are developed mainly in the Buenos Aires coast during the summer in Argentinian waters (SW Atlantic). The temporal-space distribution and the abundance of L. Tetraphylla in the Subantarctic region were analyzed, with 1458 samples embracing the Argentinian and... |

Density dependence means that exploited fish populations exhibit earlier maturity, a faster growth rate, increased fecundity and reduced egg size. Here, the consequences of these effects on population dynamics, the estimation of spawning biomass per recruit and associated biological reference points are examined by a simulation model. The model is a self-regenerating model in which the population parameters (age at maturity, growth, fecundity, egg size) vary according to three classes of population abundance. Early life stages are characterized by a size-dependent growth and mortality model. It is concluded that spawning per recruit is an ambiguous concept because, if density dependence occurs in the adult population, the spawning biomass of a cohort is... |

Tanzanian researchers of the on-going SAREC/Sida-sponsored project on Human Responses and Contribution to Environmental Change (HRAC) have focused their research on a narrow strip of the central coast of Tanzania. The area under investigation is specifically between Kisiju to the north and the Rufiji Delta to the south. Survey work was also extended to the off-shore islands including Kwale, Koma and Mafia. The preliminary intention was to look for sites that could provide light to the whole question of environmental change and its human contribution. |

While climate change is rapidly impacting marine species and ecosystems worldwide, the effects of climate warming on coastal fish nurseries have received little attention despite nurseries’ fundamental roles in recruitment and population replenishment. Here, we used a 26‐year time series (1987–2012) of fish monitoring in the Bay of Somme, a nursery in the Eastern English Channel (EEC), to examine the impacts of environmental and human drivers on the spatial and temporal dynamics of fish functional structure during a warming phase of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). We found that the nursery was initially dominated by fishes with r‐selected life‐history traits such as low trophic level, low age and size at maturity, and small offspring, which... |

The growth of Atherinella brasiliensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824) was studied through monthly samples taken at Tramandaí Lagoon, Imbé County, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Animals were captured using a beach seine net. Length-weight relationships and age- growth curves for males and females were adjusted. The growth parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth formulae are Linf=16.0 and k=0.883 for males and Linf=17.0 and k=0.825 for females. First reproduction occurred one year after recruitment. Once reaching maturity, adults of A. brasiliensis reproduced once more in the next spring with two-year-olds and disappeared soon after from size frequency distributions. A few captured animals showed a size compatible with an age of three years. |
